What Does the Volvo Expansion Mean for Foxbank?

Volvo Berkeley CountyOur little corner of the Lowcountry continues to grow! In addition to welcoming a brand new school to our neighborhood, there is also a lot of movement happening around the new Volvo plant right here in Berkeley County.

This past fall, Volvo Cars officially announced its expansion plans that included the addition of $520 million to the Berkeley County site and the addition of 1,910 more jobs. These latest developments bring the total investment to more than $1 billion and 3,900 jobs.

Part of this addition includes an 88,000-square-foot office facility built on the site, which will serve as a training center and will house research and development projects, among other things.

According to an article in the Berkeley Independent, the county has already signed off on $3.5 million to pay for additional water lines and road widening to cushion the Volvo expansion.

The county is also looking into opportunities to update the area’s infrastructure, such as expanding 176 and replacing the 176 bridges. All they need to make it happen is some extra funding.

“Berkeley County is open for business,” said county supervisor William Peagler. “We mean business but we’re not going to do business to the detriment of the quality of life to our citizens.”

There is also growth around the Volvo plant expansion, including the expansion of automotive industry supplier Sundaram-Clayton’s Ridgeville Industrial Campus facility. The company plans to spend $40 million to expand the plant due to increasing demand for its products.

The 78,000-square-foot expansion on 50 acres off Interstate 26 will create 100 jobs in addition to the company’s plans to hire 130 people over five years. This would bring Sundaram-Clayton’s total investment at the site to $90 million.

According to an article in the Post and Courier, since 2011, foreign-based companies have invested more than $19 billion in South Carolina, accounting for 42,000 jobs or about 7 percent of the state’s workforce.

With the influx of business coming to the Lowcountry, there is no question that our community is on the up and up. And for Foxbank Plantation residents, it’s definitely a good thing.
